AI or evolution apps

Anyone know of any good graphics-orientated evoulution/sim like games for the mac, with evolving lifeforms? the only once i can find is "creatures" but the graphix are terrible.

I'm really looking forward to a game called Spore, which is coming out later this year. It is designed by Will Wright (who created Sim City).

In the game you evolve creatures through several phases of development from microbial life to creatures which can reproduce, to tribes which can compete and cooperate, and beyond.

It's by far the most open-ended game I have seen, and has some cool features like allowing the user to download creatures which have been evolved from other user's games to compete against.

In designing a game like this it must be difficult to work out a tradeoff, between further open-endedness utilising evolutionary computation to evolve the creatures, versus user interaction to manually influence the development of the creatures. IMHO a game like this would be so much more interesting if the player can manipulate the environment to influence the evolution of the creatures, rather than relying on too much interaction such as using creature editors to manually modify the creatures and a user interface where the user needs to control the movements of the creatures.

Cheers,
Laurie

I haven't played this game, but it looks pretty cool:

I've also working on some ideas, not really "games" per se, but more along the lines of AI/alife entertainment software using breve... we'll see how that turns out!

AI or evolution apps

I downloaded the demo (Darwinia) and while nice, it has little to do with real evolution. It's more like Starcraft, really... start with simple basics, research a bit, to 'evolve' better species... etc... All predefined 'evolutions' ...

You should take a look at this: http://nerogame.org. It's quite cool and has everything to do with evolution. Pbb all you want. There is a version for Windows and one for Mac, unfortunately not for linux :(.

Ah, yesss... I forgot all about that one (because I couldn't run it on my initially.. ;) Their rtNEAT implementation is... pretty neat, heehee!

I like the approach: make it a game, to lure people, and in the meantime do some honest experimenting with AI...

I wonder how well rtNEAT could be adapted to breve?

I wouldn't mind to run it as some kind of distributed evolving agent in a complex environment 8)

it does seem to work pretty well under WINE: http://z.cs.utexas.edu/users/nn/nero/forums/viewtopic.php?t=304
