Windows load meshshape failure

Using a trial version of 3D Studio Max 8, BREVE 2.4 on a P3 850 512mb laptop.
Saved a sphere as .3DS and .MAX when attempting to load either image I either get a pop up from the OS saying abort, retry, ignore, or I get the windows send error report pop up.
